چکیده

The phenomenology of quantum systems in curved space-times is among the most fascinating fields of physics, allowing –often at the gedankenexperiment level– constraints on tentative theories of quantum gravity. Determining the dynamics of fields in curved backgrounds remains however a complicated task because of the highly intricate partial differential equations involved, especially when the space metric exhibits no symmetry. In this article, we provide –in a pedagogical way– a general formalism to determine this dynamics at the semi-classical order. To this purpose, a generic expression for the semi-classical propagator is computed and the equation of motion for the probability four-current is derived. Those results underline a direct analogy between the computation of the propagator in general relativistic quantum mechanics and the computation of the propagator for stationary systems in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. We discuss massive scalar perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. We argue that quantum effects alter the effective potential near the horizon resulting in Poincaré recurrences in Green functions. Results at the semi-classical level are independent of the details of the modification of the potential provided its minimum near the horizon is inversely proportional to the square of the Poinca...

We present a systematic semiclassical procedure to compute the partition function for scalar field theories at finite temperature. The central objects in our scheme are the solutions of the classical equations of motion in imaginary time, with spatially independent boundary conditions. Field fluctuations – both field deviations around these classical solutions, and fluctuations of the boundary ...

A formulation of U(1) symmetric classical membrane motions (preserving one rotational symmetry) is given, and reductions to systems of ODE’s, as well as some ideas concerning singularities and integrability. Let me start by giving some particular example(s) of a 2-dimensonal (timelike, time periodic) extremal manifold M2 ⊂ R and 3-folds (singularities included) of vanishing mean curvature, in 4...

We present a new stationary, asymptotically flat solution of 5D EinsteinMaxwell gravity describing a Saturn-like black object: a rotating black hole surrounded by a rotating dipole black ring. The solution is generated by combining the vacuum black Saturn solution and the vacuum black ring solution with appropriately chosen parameters. Some basic properties of the solution are analyzed and the ...

The role of Chern-Simons (CS) actions is reviewed, starting from the observation that all classical actions in Hamiltonian form can be viewed as 0+1 CS systems, in the same class with the coupling between the electromagnetic field and a point charge. Some suggestions are derived that could shed some light on the quantization problem in D=2n-1¿3 dimensions.
